What is sintered powder filter

A sintered powder filter element is a porous metal filtration component manufactured through a powder metallurgy process. Fine metal powders—typically stainless steel (304 or 316L), titanium, copper, or nickel-based alloys—are compacted into a specific shape and then heated in a controlled, high-temperature furnace in a process called sintering.

During sintering, the metal particles diffuse and bond at their contact points without fully melting. This creates a rigid, monolithic structure with a complex, three-dimensional network of interconnected pores. The result is a filter element that is both strong and permeable, with a fixed pore structure that does not shift under pressure.

Unlike filters made from woven mesh or pleated paper, a sintered powder filter has no welds, no binders, and no separate support layers. The entire element is one continuous piece of porous metal.

different materials of sintered powder filter

Sintered powder filters can be manufactured from various metal powders. The choice of material directly affects corrosion resistance, temperature tolerance, mechanical strength, and cost. Below is a comparison of the three most common materials

Feature Stainless Steel (304 / 316L) Copper Titanium
Primary Applications Hydraulic systems, chemical processing, compressed air, water treatment, general industrial filtration Lubrication systems, fuel filtration, low-pressure gas, flame arrestment, heat exchange Extremely corrosive environments, chlorides, seawater, oxidizing acids, pharmaceutical and medical applications
Corrosion Resistance Good – 316L offers enhanced resistance to chlorides and acidic environments Moderate – suitable for mild corrosive media, oxidizes over time in aggressive environments Excellent – superior resistance to strong acids, chlorides, and oxidizing agents
Temperature Resistance Up to 480°C (continuous) Up to 300°C Up to 300–500°C (depending on grade)
Mechanical Strength High strength, rigidity, and impact resistance High strength, ductility, good plasticity, oxidation resistance High strength-to-weight ratio, excellent resistance to pressure differentials and vibration
Cost Moderate (most cost-effective for general use) Moderate Higher (premium material for demanding environments)
Typical Filtration Ratings 0.2 – 200 μm 1 – 100 μm 0.2 – 200 μm
Key Advantage Best all-around balance of performance, durability, and cost High thermal/electrical conductivity, flame arrestment properties Unmatched corrosion resistance in chloride-rich and acidic environments

Selection Guidance:

  • Choose Stainless Steel for most general industrial applications – hydraulic oil, water, mild chemicals, and compressed air. It offers the best balance of performance and cost.
  • Choose Copper when thermal or electrical conductivity is required, for low-pressure gas systems, or for flame arrestment applications.
  • Choose Titanium when the fluid contains chlorides (seawater, bleach), strong oxidizing acids, or when biocompatibility is required for pharmaceutical or medical use.

filtration principle

Sintered powder filters operate on the principle of depth filtration. Unlike surface filters that trap particles only on the outer layer, sintered powder filters capture contaminants throughout the entire thickness of the filter wall. The tortuous, three-dimensional network of interconnected pores forces fluid to follow a winding path. Particles are intercepted and retained within this complex pore structure, providing:

The pore structure is stable and does not change with pressure. Unlike some filter media where pores enlarge or deform under pressure, the sintered metal structure maintains its pore geometry, ensuring consistent filtration performance throughout the element's service life.

Production Process

Sintered powder filter elements are manufactured through a powder metallurgy process:

1. Powder Selection and Classification

High-purity metal powder (stainless steel, copper, titanium, or other alloys) is selected based on the required material properties. The powder particle size is carefully controlled – finer powders produce smaller pores and finer filtration ratings.

2. Molding / Compaction

The metal powder is placed into a precision mold and compacted under high pressure (typically 200–400 MPa) to form a "green" compact. This compact has the rough shape of the final element but is still fragile.

3. Sintering (High-Temperature Diffusion Bonding)

The green compact is heated in a controlled-atmosphere furnace (typically under vacuum or hydrogen) to temperatures between 1,100°C and 1,350°C. During sintering:

Metal particles diffuse and bond at their contact points without fully melting

A rigid, monolithic structure is formed with a three-dimensional network of interconnected pores

The pore size and porosity are determined by powder particle size, compaction pressure, and sintering parameters

4. Cooling and Finishing

After sintering, the element undergoes controlled cooling. Additional operations may include:

Machining to achieve precise dimensions

Welding of end caps or connection interfaces

Surface finishing (cleaning, electropolishing)

Quality control testing (dimensional verification, bubble point testing)

5. Quality Control

Each element is inspected for dimensional accuracy, pore integrity, and filtration performance.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between a sintered powder filter and a porous metal filter?

A: Sintered powder filter is one type of porous metal filter manufactured by compacting and sintering metal powders.
"Porous metal filter" is a broader term that also includes sintered mesh, metal fiber felt, and other porous metallic filtration media. Sintered powder filters are known for their uniform pore structure, excellent permeability, and high mechanical strength.

Q2: How is pore size different from micron rating?

A: Pore size refers to the average size of the interconnected pores inside the filter media, while micron rating indicates the particle size the filter is designed to retain.

Q3: Can you design filters based on my drawings?

A: Yes. We manufacture OEM and custom sintered powder filters according to customer drawings, samples, or technical specifications.
Customization options include:

Q4: Do sintered powder filters generate particle shedding?

A: No. Because the metal powders are metallurgically bonded during the sintering process, the filter media does not release fibers or loose particles under normal operating conditions.

This makes them suitable for high-purity applications.

Q5: What information is required for an accurate quotation?
A:To provide the most suitable solution, please provide:
